Leal Elementary School is a diverse and inclusive learning community committed to helping every student acquire knowledge, develop essential skills, build strong character, and achieve personal greatness. We are located in the heart of downtown Urbana, intermingled between the large trees of the Western edge of Urbana and the University of Illinois.

Our staff works incredibly hard to create learning spaces that are supportive of all students’ needs. As a whole school community, we encourage students to follow four building wide expectations: Be Kind, Be Ready, Be Safe and Work Hard.
Students enjoy a variety of engaging academic and enrichment opportunities, including Battle of the Books, our annual Young Authors writing contest, and outdoor learning experiences. Leal also has the largest before and after school program in Urbana, with over 100 students enrolled.
Leal Elementary School is supported by a strong and active PTA that strengthens connections among students, staff, families, and the community. Our PTA provides special events and traditions, including a school carnival and movie night. We look forward to partnering with you throughout your student’s educational journey at Leal.
